Alabama Colleges and Universities

Alabama is home to more than 75 public, private and non-profit college and university campuses, spanning the state from the southern Gulf Coast to its northern border. Hundreds of academic and technical degree options are available to serve the state’s 4.9 million residents.

Alabama has 14 public universities, 26 two-year public institutions and 17 non-profit, independent post-secondary schools. About 20 licensed private schools also offer degrees within the state. With so many choices, every student should be able to find a school that meets their educational needs.

The University of Alabama (UA) System has three locations in the state -- Huntsville, Birmingham and its headquarters in Tuscaloosa. UA in Tuscaloosa, founded in 1831, has been named to U.S. News & World Report’s list of the nation’s top 50 public universities for several years. Prospective students can choose from about 200 academic majors, 69 master programs and 57 doctoral degree programs. Enrollment at the 1,000-acre campus is about 28,000.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham, opened in 1936, has about 17,500 students enrolled. The campus also boasts a national ranking by the Princeton Review, which places it among the top 15 percent of U.S. colleges and universities.

The University of Alabama in Huntsville is a smaller campus branch, with enrollment of about 7400. The institution offers 30 bachelor's degree programs, 18 master degrees and 13 doctorate programs. It has been named among the 150 best national doctoral universities by U.S. News & World Report.

Troy University, with a worldwide enrollment of 31,000, is the state’s largest university. Troy has 60 sites in eight countries around the globe, including Alabama sites in Troy, Montgomery, Phenix City and Dothan. The school also offers an online “E-campus.” Troy was named the state’s top public university by Forbes Magazine in 2009.

Another sizeable four-year institution is Auburn University, located on a 1,800-acre site in the city of Auburn. Auburn offers more than 140 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree choices. About 40 percent of its 25,078 enrollees are out-of-state students. A second location, Auburn University in Montgomery, offers about 90 areas of study and is known for its world-class business school.

Another college option in Montgomery is Alabama State University. Originally founded as a college for African Americans, Alabama State now enrolls a diverse group of 5600 students from 40 states. The university has nearly 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

Alabama A & M, Athens State University and the University of North Alabama all are located in the northern part of the state. Alabama A & M, with about 5800 students, offers 70 undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs at its site in Normal. Athens State offers more than 30 different degrees to its 3500 students, along with many online courses. The University of North Alabama in Florence provides more than 60 undergraduate programs and seven master’s degree choices to its 7100 students.

The University of Montevallo, with 3000 students, is located in the center of the state on a 160-acre campus. The institution has been applauded by U.S. News and World Report as a leading public master’s level university in the state. To the northeast, Jacksonville State University offers 40 accredited academic programs and a growing distance learning curriculum. That 125-year-old institution enrolls about 9500 students.

On the western side of the state, the University of West Alabama has about 2100 students enrolled in a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. The university, located on 600 acres in Livingston, celebrated the 175th year since its founding in 2010.

In the far southern region of the state, the University of South Alabama enrolls about 15,000 students on its Mobile campus. One of the fastest growing institutions in the state, the university has a sizeable medical school and is the site of the Mitchell Cancer Institute.

In addition to these four-year public institutions, Alabama has a wide assortment of two-year public colleges, technical schools and private universities of all sizes offering a comprehensive slate of educational choices to Alabama students.
