LPN to ADN Degree Options

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), also called Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) in some areas, are certified nursing professionals trained for one or two years in a classroom and practical setting. In order to pursue a career as a Registered Nurse (RN), an individual must take a series of required coursework such as an associate’s degree program in nursing. Obtaining an associate’s in nursing enables the individual to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Passing the NCLEX is necessary to become a certified Registered Nurse. Many colleges and online universities offer LPN-to Associate’s in Nursing course tracks enabling those currently certified as Licensed Practical Nurses to fulfill coursework necessary for seeking a career as a Registered Nurse. The Registered Nurse certification is considered the nursing industry benchmark and is now required by most hospitals for nursing employment.

The majority of students in associate’s in nursing degree programs ultimately pursue their RN certification. Because LPN-to-Associate’s students are employed as LPNs in either a full- or part-time capacity, online programs can be the ideal fit for students of this type of program. Online coursework offers flexibility in scheduling of classes and study time to fit the students needs. One drawback to this arrangement, however, is that students often experience more individual contact with professors in traditional programs when compared to that experienced by students of online programs.

LPN to associate degree programs typically require between 18 and 36 months to complete. Because these programs are considered “fast track,” course schedules are sometimes condensed to complete the program sooner.

Online associate’s programs can choose to become accredited, meaning that they are reviewed and confirmed to meet a minimum academic standard. Thorough research into any online or distance learning nursing program is necessary. Training in the field of nursing requires hands-on practical experience which may present a challenge for an online program.
