A Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a registered nurse who has advanced specialized education. A CNS can specialize in a specific patient population such as geriatrics or pediatrics, and medical environments like the operating and emergency room. CNS practice can also focus on a certain type of medical sub-specialty like cardiovascular disease, or specific clinical and surgical procedures.
Tasks and Responsibilities
The CNS may be assigned to analyze patient care practices and optimize existing health care systems. Since they focus on a specific area, the CNS may be tapped to serve as an expert consultant to the other staff. Depending on the area of expertise, s/he may also be tasked to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of specific diseases, disabilities, and injuries.
CNS Education Requirements
A registered nurse could pursue a career as a CNS by taking a graduate program in a preferred area of specialization. This usually takes two years to finish, depending on program type and course load. In addition, the prospective CNS needs to accomplish 500 hours of hands-on preparation.
A CNS is required to learn seven core competencies which include clinical practice, coaching, collaboration, consultation, research, clinical and professional leadership, and ethical decision-making.
