Will Teen Stars Go To College?

Learn if teen idols like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus will go to college.

What's more likely to happen: Justin Bieber becoming the next King of Pop or King of Campus? Before we discuss the likelihood of Bieber ever going to college, let's examine the fortunes (and misfortunes) of some former teen stars who once upon a time considered getting a bachelor's degree.
  • Natalie Portman, who made her feature film debut at the age of 13, once told the New York Times, "I don't care if [college] ruins my career. I'd rather be smart than a movie star." Now she's both. Portman graduated from Harvard with a degree in psychology.
  • Lindsey Lohan went to high school until 11th grade - and then was homeschooled. Though she has considered college, she has yet to get a degree.
  • Jodie Foster was a huge star before earning her bachelor's degree in literature from Yale.
  • Paris Hilton was expelled (surprise, surprise) from a Connecticut prep school in 1999. She later earned her GED.
  • James Franco, Anna Paquin, and Julia Stiles all attended Columbia University in New York.
Yeah, it's a small sample size… but is anyone sensing a pattern here? Going to college is a good move! Keep reading for the latest on whether today's hottest teen stars will ever earn a college degree.

Justin Bieber

The odds of Justin Bieber going to college don't look great. The 16-year-old declared that "school sucks" in a recent Billboard Magazine interview, fresh off a biology lesson with his private tutor, who is not to be confused with his swagger coach. Yes, Bieber has a swagger coach.

Bieber's many handlers aside, it's worth noting that he learned to play the drums at age 3, while also teaching himself to play the guitar, trumpet and piano. Dumb he is not.

Still, it's fair to conclude that this teen heartthrob won't be going to college anytime soon.

Selena Gomez

Disney star Selena Gomez was recently spotted on the sidelines of a Notre Dame football game with friend and fellow teen idol Taylor Swift. Swift's brother is a freshman at Notre Dame.

As for Gomez, she once told the New York Post that "I'm going to try to pull a Natalie Portman. Natalie went to Harvard while shooting 'Star Wars.' I don't know how she did it. I want to have lunch with her and ask her – that seems like a bunch of stress right there."

No word on whether she had lunch with Portman, but Gomez is pretty busy herself these days. She's currently a freshman at Northwestern University in Chicago.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus was 12 when she shot to stardom playing the title character in Disney's Hannah Montana. She's older (and richer!) now – and more focused on her career than ever before.

Cyrus recently told an Atlanta radio station that she was putting her college plans on hold.

"My sister went to MTSU in Nashville, so I'd probably want to be there with all my friends, but I'm not gonna go to college right now," Cyrus said in the 2010 interview. "I am a firm believer that you can go back at any age you want, because my grandma went back to college at 62 years old."

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato, a popular singer-songwriter and star on Disney's Camp Rock, was so fed up with bullying that she transitioned to homeschooling in middle school.

No firm college plans yet but Lovato does like some subjects more than others.

"My best subject was probably math, algebra, stuff like that. I finished algebra 2 in two months," she told Tiger Beat. "I'm bad with my grammar. There's not a specific answer and you can't just solve the problem."

Lovato has also expressed an interest in going to film school because she wants to be a director.
